Those iconic leaf holes have a name — fenestration — and a theory to match: scientists think the gaps may let sunlight punch through to lower leaves while helping the plant survive strong winds in its native Central American jungles. Basically, it evolved built-in air conditioning. Fun fact: it can technically fruit and taste like a fruit salad in the wild, though your living room plant is unlikely to try. Give it something to climb and it'll happily turn your apartment into a mini rainforest.
